Our story

It started in one home.

The Safe Home Project was started by a family who set up internet filtering in their own home and saw the difference it made.

At first it was just for us — a practical step to protect our household from content we didn't want finding its way to our kids. We didn't expect it to change much. But something shifted. Conversations got easier. The default environment of our home felt different.

Then friends started asking how we did it. Then family members. Then people from church who had seen something alarming on their kids' devices and didn't know where to start.

We kept walking people through the same setup — a free tool called NextDNS, configured on the home router, with an accountability partner holding the admin credentials. It took about an hour. It worked every time.

So we wrote it down. That document became a guide. That guide became this site.

This project exists because every family deserves to feel equipped — not overwhelmed — when it comes to protecting their home online.

What we believe

Some things worth saying plainly

Technology isn't the enemy.

We use it, love it, and build things with it. The goal isn't to keep kids away from the internet — it's to make the home environment the default, and the worst content the exception.

This isn't about distrust.

Filtering isn't surveillance. It's the same instinct that makes you put a fence around a pool or lock a medicine cabinet. You don't do those things because you distrust your kids — you do them because you love them.

The research is clear.

The harms of early pornography exposure, compulsive social media use, and AI-driven content are documented in peer-reviewed journals, Surgeon General advisories, and major academic institutions. This isn't a fringe concern.

You're not alone in this.

Every parent navigating this is doing so in real time, without a playbook. We're all figuring it out together. This project exists to make that a little easier.
